Call for Poster Presentations

The National Association of Black Social Workers, Office of Student Affairs would like to all students (Undergraduate, Graduate, and PHD) to submit requests to display Posters and Demonstrations at the 45th Annual NABSW National Conference, "Building Coalitions For Community Empowerment: Ujima - A Model For Collective Work And Responsibility," in Jacksonville, FL. Posters and Demonstrations offer students an opportunity to present late-breaking research results, ongoing research projects, and speculative or innovative work in progress. The formal setting of the Posters and Demonstrations encourage presenters and participants to engage in discussions about the presented work. Such discussions can be invaluable for the future work of presenters, while offering participants an effective way to broaden their knowledge of emerging research trends and to network with other researchers.

Instructions

We invite submissions relevant to the area of Social Work, Social Justice, and Civil Rights issues affecting African American Communities.

Authors must submit an email including their name, address, and phone number along with a one-page extended abstract for evaluation. All submissions will undergo a common review process and will be contacted directly if approved. All authors must be a registered participant at the conference and present their work.

Decisions about acceptance will be based on relevance to Social Work and Social Justice, and Civil Rights issues: originality, potential significance, topicality and clarity. For demonstrations, authors are strongly encouraged to include in their submission a link to where the demo (live or recorded video) can be found. Presenters please make clear what exactly will be demonstrated to participants.

The abstracts of accepted posters and demonstrations will be given to all conference attendees. Submissions should include the title of your poster and a one page description of your research.

All posters should be prepared on a large 25x 25 or 28x 30 display boards .All Submissions are due to Secretary Lia Andrews at osa.secretary1@gmail.com by Sunday March 17, 2012 no later than 5pm.

Possible Employment Opportunity!!!

Patrick Crawford, President of the DC Metro ABSW Chapter is seeking members and potential members of NABSW who may be open to being deployed to work in the tri-state disaster areas of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These are paid positions and Patrick's agency is working out the details with the sponsoring agency. Assistance with transportation, food, and lodging will be provided during the deployment with a cumulative payment at the end of the temporary employment tour. The deployment can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 41/2 months. Payment will be rendered within 45 days after completion of the assignment.

A Message from the NABSW Executive Board

Item 1. The postmark deadline for submitting membership rosters and dues is being extended by two weeks (Friday, November 16, 2012) for all chapters who were in the path of hurricane Sandy. This includes all chapters in the following areas:

•DC
•Maryland
•Virginia
•New Jersey
•New York
•Connecticut
•Pennsylvania
•Massachusetts
•Nova Scotia, Canada

Item 2. For chapter experiencing difficulty in recruiting or maintaining the required 10 members, they will be able to renew and re-affiliate with 5-9 members. The motion passed at the Steering Committee Meeting in Jacksonville, FL on October 5, 2012 as follows:

To allow chapters who have identified to the membership committee that they are not re-affiliating or are experiencing difficulties establishing a chapter because of the 10 member requirement, an exception to the 10 member requirement is being adjusted as follows:

For one year, community chapters may join with voting rights, with 5-9 members. The normal annual chapter amount of $400.00 per chapter will be prorated to $40.00 per member. Membership dues per member will remain at $25.00 per regular member. If community chapters also have student members, the student membership dues of $10.00 per student will remain the same. Example, a chapter joining with 5 members would submit $200.00 per capita and $125.00 in membership dues for a total of $325.00.

For student chapters, the normal $25.00 per year chapter amount remains the same. Membership dues will remain at $10.00 per student member and $25 for regular members. For example, a student chapter joining with 7 members would submit $70.00 per capita and $25.00 in chapter dues for a total of $95.00.

The membership committee will assess each chapter with less than 10 members periodically. If after one year, and a chapter is still meeting challenges in recruiting 10 members, the membership co-chairs may make a request to the executive board for an additional one year extension.

During the SCM there was much talk regarding scholarships for students, so we wanted to provide an update. Although scholarship were scheduled to be posted TODAY, due to some unforeseen obstacles the release of information will not be posted until later in the week. Conference News Updates

We don't know if you've been told... but NABSW 44th Annual Conference is just around the corner and we hope you all can make it out and join us in Atlanta, Ga. So many wonderful things are planned, OSA is still looking for volunteers to participate with our day of service project where we get to work directly with Atlanta youth around bullying, OSA will also be hosting its first Student Research Symposium and Gallery where students can use posters to present research they've been working on, and gather in the spirit of Harambee. All interested student should send description of presentation to Secretary Pugh at osa-secretary@nabsw.org by March 23, 2012. In addition, to the long list of conference activities, symposiums,and workshops; OSA has also planned a party for a cause. Please plan to come out and let your hair down, enjoy great music and company. All we ask is that you bring a box of pencils for donation. If you can't make OSA's party for a cause we hope you are able to attend....ATL Greater Metro Chapter of NABSW night out for AIDS Awareness event called PUMP UP THE RED on Tuesday April 3, 2012 from 6-10pm. It will be hosted at barONE, which has been featured on A...TL housewives. A nice lounge atmosphere. We are expecting a HUGE turnout.
