Dear Governor Scott;
On behalf of the National Association of Black Social
Workers, we ask that Ms. Marissa Alexander’s sentence be commuted with time
served.
Victims of domestic violence, in stressful situations, with
their abusive partners tend to act erratically.
However, in the closed confines of a home, where it is nearly impossible
to miss a target, Ms. Alexander did just that.
Her intent by any reasonable person could be interpreted as protecting
self from a known violent abuser, rather seeking to do bodily harm. She has been confined for over two
years. It is now time that some sense
of justice is carried out and for her to be released.
The punishment did not fit the crime. Ms. Alexander has been deprived of her
freedom and normal family life for too long.
Ms. Alexander has a very young child to provide care. Though reasonable minds may differ over the
justification for her conviction, few would agree that the crime merited such
harsh punishment.
In the context of fundamental fairness, it is time that
justice is done for Ms. Marissa Alexander.
Justice demands that she be released and as quickly as possible. She has been punished for far too long.
Thank you for investigating this petition on behalf of
commutation for her. Make our system
fair and just by expediting her release.
Sincerely,
Joe E. Benton, President
National Association of Black Social Workers

**DO YOU HAVE STUDENT LOANS???**** Elizabeth Warren wants to talk to you!
The fight over student loans is coming to a head. More than 434,000 (!) MoveOn members have signed on in support of Sen. Elizabeth Warren's bill for students to get the same low rates on their loans as the big banks do.
But with student loan rates set to double on July 1 if Congress does nothing, Republican members of Congress took a massive step backward. Last week the Republican-controlled House voted to get rid of fixed-interest loans for students entirely—a devastating move which could result in "ballooning financing costs" for new graduates struggling to get by.1
If thousands of people like us don't get involved in this fight now, student loan rates could double—or worse—in just over a month. So we're holding an emergency online briefing on Monday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to talk about the student loan fight, understand some potential solutions, and make sure we're all ready for the monthlong fight ahead.
All you need to join is a computer with an internet connection. Can you join us?
Here are the details:

Reminder for Call for Poster Presentations!
Hotep Brothers and Sisters
The National Association of Black Social Workers, Office of Student Affairs would like to all students (Undergraduate, Graduate, and PHD) to submit requests to display Posters and Demonstrations at the 45th Annual NABSW National Conference, "Building Coalitions For Community Empowerment: Ujima - A Model For Collective Work And Responsibility," in Jacksonville, FL. Posters and Demonstrations offer students an opportunity to present late-breaking research results, ongoing research projects, and speculative or innovative work in progress. The formal setting of the Posters and Demonstrations encourage presenters and participants to engage in discussions about the presented work. Such discussions can be invaluable for the future work of presenters, while offering participants an effective way to broaden their knowledge of emerging research trends and to network with other researchers.
Instructions
We invite submissions relevant to the area of Social Work, Social Justice, and Civil Rights issues affecting African American Communities.
Authors must submit an email including their name, address, and phone number along with a one-page extended abstract for evaluation. All submissions will undergo a common review process and will be contacted directly if approved. All authors must be a registered participant at the conference and present their work.

For demonstrations, authors are strongly encouraged to include in their submission a link to where the demo (live or recorded video) can be found. Presenters please make clear what exactly will be demonstrated to participants.

A Message from the NABSW Executive Board
Item 1. The postmark deadline for submitting membership rosters and dues is being extended by two weeks (Friday, November 16, 2012) for all chapters who were in the path of hurricane Sandy. This includes all chapters in the following areas:
•DC
•Maryland
•Virginia
•New Jersey
•New York
•Connecticut
•Pennsylvania
•Massachusetts
•Nova Scotia, Canada
Item 2. For chapter experiencing difficulty in recruiting or maintaining the required 10 members, they will be able to renew and re-affiliate with 5-9 members. The motion passed at the Steering Committee Meeting in Jacksonville, FL on October 5, 2012 as follows:
To allow chapters who have identified to the membership committee that they are not re-affiliating or are experiencing difficulties establishing a chapter because of the 10 member requirement, an exception to the 10 member requirement is being adjusted as follows:
For one year, community chapters may join with voting rights, with 5-9 members. The normal annual chapter amount of $400.00 per chapter will be prorated to $40.00 per member. Membership dues per member will remain at $25.00 per regular member. If community chapters also have student members, the student membership dues of $10.00 per student will remain the same. Example, a chapter joining with 5 members would submit $200.00 per capita and $125.00 in membership dues for a total of $325.00.
For student chapters, the normal $25.00 per year chapter amount remains the same. Membership dues will remain at $10.00 per student member and $25 for regular members. For example, a student chapter joining with 7 members would submit $70.00 per capita and $25.00 in chapter dues for a total of $95.00.
The membership committee will assess each chapter with less than 10 members periodically. If after one year, and a chapter is still meeting challenges in recruiting 10 members, the membership co-chairs may make a request to the executive board for an additional one year extension.
Please contact our membership Co-Chairs, Roxanne Ellis-Denby, rellisdenby@att.net or Traci Lewis, lewis.40@osu.edu with any questions.

***TIME SENSITIVE APPLY BY NOV 2***
Hotep Family, please see the message below as forwarded from the Greater Metro ABSW. This is a time sensitive application please apply immediately if interested.
Hello:
We are still accepting applications for the U.S. Department of State Student Experience Program (formerly known as the U.S. Department of State Internship Program Spring/Summer/Fall).
Click here (https://state.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/326501200) to go directly to USAJobs to start the Gateway to State online application. Please note that the deadline to submit completed applications is November 2, 2012.
This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 10-week, unpaid internships that provide intensive educational and professional experience within the environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency.
The unpaid internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S. embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand, hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with – Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of America’s diplomatic efforts.
As a Student Experience intern, you may have the opportunity to:
•Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;
•Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives;
•Help organize and support events, including international and/or multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;
•Contribute to the management and administration of the Department of State and America’s foreign policy; and
•Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S. foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.
So consider spending your summer 2013 with the U.S. Department of State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S. diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy initiatives. You’ll not only have an experience of a lifetime, you may even earn educational credit.*
* Applicants who are selected for a U.S. Department of State Student Experience can contact the selecting bureau, or the central Student Programs office, if they require further details about the program to support their request for academic credit.
Please visit Student Programs for more information about the Student Experience Program, and to start the online application process via USAJobs.

•Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;
•Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives;
•Help organize and support events, including international and/or multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;
Please note that the deadline to submit completed applications is November 2, 2012.
